Varalakshmi Vratham 2026: the date, and what to wear

Varalakshmi Vratham 2026 falls on Friday, 28 August. Some Tamil, Telugu and Kannada panchangams mark it a week earlier, on Friday, 21 August — both are followed, and neither is wrong. If your family keeps the earlier date, you already know it. If you are unsure, the 28th is the one most households in Tamil Nadu will observe, being the Friday before Shravana Purnima.

Either way, the shopping happens three to seven days ahead. That is the week the saree comes out of the cupboard and everyone realises the jewellery does not go with it.

What the day is

Varalakshmi Vratham is a vratham kept by married women for the wellbeing of their family. Goddess Lakshmi is invited into the home in the form of a decorated kalasham — a pot dressed as the goddess herself, with a face, a saree, flowers, and jewellery.

That last part is worth noticing. On this day, jewellery is not only worn. It is offered. Many families dress the kalasham in a haram or a necklace from the household's own collection, which is why the day carries a weight that an ordinary festival does not.

What women traditionally wear

The conventions are gentle rather than strict:

• Silk, and ideally new. A pattu saree if you have one. Red, deep pink, mustard, green and gold all sit well with the day.
• Gold tones over silver. Lakshmi is associated with gold, and almost every traditional piece worn on the day reflects that.
• Temple motifs. Lakshmi faces, mango or paisley shapes, peacocks, kasu (coin) work. These are the visual vocabulary of the festival.
• The neckline decides everything. A short necklace alone can look thin against a heavy silk saree. The traditional answer is two lengths — a close-fitting necklace with a longer haram beneath it.

Putting a look together

If you own one good piece, build outward from it rather than buying a whole new set.

A short necklace if you are layering. Worn above the haram, a necklace closes the gap at the throat and makes the whole set read as intentional.

Skip the rest. Bangles and a nose pin, if you wear one, are enough. The saree is doing a lot of work already.

A note on buying for the kalasham

If you are dressing the kalasham, choose the piece for how it will look draped over a pot at eye level, not on a person. Longer pieces with visible motif work read better from a distance than a fine chain will.
